New Solution from Mitek Automatically Captures Driver's License Data

Mitek announced recently that it developed a new solution, Mobile Photo Account Opening (MPAO), which streamlines the process of opening a financial account. During a mobile browsing session, all the user has to do is take a picture of the license and MPAO captures the data.

San Diego-based Mitek develops technology that allows financial institutions to capture data from documents, eliminating the need for manual entry of that information. It developed technology that allows a check to be deposited by simply taking a picture of it. So far the company has 21 patents issued and 22 pending mostly in the areas of mobile image capture or processing, fraud detection, and character recognition.

A video demo on Mitek’s site demonstrates the process of capturing driver’s license information. During a browser session on a mobile device, the user searches for a mobile-enabled page from the bank and chooses an option to open an account. One important point is that this is not done from a mobile app, because most users would not have downloaded a bank’s mobile app if they were not already account holders.

The user gets a few instructions to ensure a successful capture of the information from the license. The image must be in focus, there should be no glare coming off the license surface, and the license should rest on a dark background. After taking the picture of the front, the user must take a picture of the barcoded image on the back of the license.

MPAO uses an analytic process to evaluate the quality of the images captured. Assuming that evaluation is OK, the information is captured and can be reviewed by the user before submitting. None of the sensitive information captured is stored on the mobile device. The MPAO solution can be used for other processes like applying for credit, insurance, or a loan.

Mitek has automated another tedious process that often goes with obtaining financial and insurance services—the application. With MPAO, information is captured accurately, thus avoiding entry errors, and users are authenticated by leveraging modern ID card technology. It means a more user friendly experience for customers, and less job security for tellers.
