Smart Card Alliance Latin America and FSU- Panama Partner to Educate Consumers

The Smart Card Alliance is a not-for-profit, multi-industry organization established to increase awareness of smart card technology by bringing more understanding, adoption, use and widespread application by consumers and businesses. The Smart Card Alliance Latin America (SCALA) provides the same initiative to Latin America and the Caribbean with multilingual education programs, market research, and advocacy amongst all the countries in the region. The organization announced it has entered into a partnership with Florida State University-Panama for a smartcard technology education program to further that goal.

Compared to the United States, smartcards have wider adoption in Latin America and the Caribbean with EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) chip cards, mobile payments, e-passports, smart transit fare cards, secure government, healthcare, enterprise IDs and more.

The new agreement between SCALA and FSU-Panama is a five-year initiative to develop the Integrated Circuit Card (ICC) Center of Excellence and expand educational programs in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The center will provide training and certify existing new executives in the industry on smart card technology and how it can be applied across different industry sectors. This will include developing students in the University by encouraging them to enter into this field and produce professionals for smart card related companies. Additionally, they will start providing industry reports and smartcard training materials for other educational institutions throughout the region.

"We are looking forward to working with educational leader FSU–Panama to provide the professional development resources necessary for organizations to meet demand and create new, innovative applications for the technology," said Edgar Betts, director of SCALA.

Students will have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills by working with industry leaders to further implement smart card technology in the region. They will provide white papers, use cases, market trends, research, reports, studies, and other resources for publication for leading industry companies advocating the benefits of smart card technology.

The center will also be a resource for disseminating the latest information regarding smart card technology as well as a place where experts and professionals from the financial, government, identity, security, transportation, healthcare, telecommunications, and other sectors can be trained on the advances of the technology.

"While smart card technology plays an important role in many industries in the region, such as government identity programs and payments, information and professional training on the technology are limited," said Dr. Carlos Langoni, rector of FSU–Panama. "By working with SCALA on the Center of Excellence, our goal is develop students' smart card expertise and enable current and future executives to have successful careers in smart card-related industries."
