Amazon's ComiXology Updates Mobile App, Changes User Shopping and Payments

ComiXology is an increasingly popular marketplace for digital comics, which allows users to browse, pay for and download comics about their favorite superheroes and villains directly to their mobile devices. Sporting popular publishers and classic stories from Marvel Comics, DC and more, the Amazon-owned website and app is growing in numbers. However, an update to the mobile app for the program seeks to change the way that users browse and shop for comics, as well as the ways in which they pay for them.

One of the biggest changes is that the app will no longer support in-app purchases on iOS, nor will Android's Google Wallet be supported by the updated app. Instead, users will have to either register a credit card with the app, or connect a PayPal account if they wish to purchase their comics. This change arrived only two weeks after Amazon purchased ComiXology. The change in payment system is due to the fact that Amazon would like to avoid paying 30 percent of each purchase through the iOS Comics app, and a similar fee is avoided by ditching Android's Google Wallet as well.

Thankfully, customers who had already made purchases through ComiXology will be able to retain all of their comics through the cloud. In order to thank their loyal customers, ComiXology is also offering a gift card promo for those that upgrade to the new app. All past customers who had previously made a purchase through either ComiXology app are now treated to a $5 eGift Card, which they can redeem for even more comics through the digital marketplace.

While this gift card (which expires quickly on May 25th) is only officially offered to American customers, International users of ComiXology can simply change their device's location by clicking on the bottom right corner of the official website's homepage.

Popular card reader, Square, also made changes to its mobile offering this week in a move that makes it possible to merchants to do better inventory tracking and offer order ahead and pick-up capabilities for users.
