With so many ways to connect us with old and new friends, it’s getting difficult for people to choose whether they want to use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, FaceTime, Spotify... and the list continues (and at this point in time, it might not end). Social media gives communication a new meaning, as friends and family can connect with each other on a platform that replaces the need for physical or voice interaction.
Not only can you say happy birthday, or have your Easilydo personal digital assistant automatically send a message via a social media account, you can now send birthday gifts as well. Last year Facebook launched a feature that gave members the options of purchasing physical gifts for friends on the site. Now, with its newest feature, you can purchase virtual gifts.
Facebook, one of the most popular social media networking services, has a new service that allows users to purchase and give gift cards to other members that can be used at select retailers and restaurants including Target, Jamba Juice, Sephora and Louis Vuitton.
Earlier this year Facebook revealed a new tool that allowed members to find information on people, places, interests and photos, which can be used to help users when trying to figure out what type of gift to buy their friends. Facebook has turned into a one-stop-shop, where every aspect of a friendship or relationship can be done through its site.
It seems that social media has begun to replace many aspects of what we consider being “social.” Instead of a physical presence creating your popularity, now all you need is a digital identity with more than one social media account that you access on a daily basis.
In a world that is being reduced to a communication platform that exists over the Web, it seems that even the act of giving a gift is joining the digital realm.
